Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines.
In the Core requirements, SLHC majors complete two required language classes (Spanish 301 plus one other from SPAN 302; SPAN 303; SPAN305; SPAN 313; SPAN 315, SPAN 345). In addition, students’ performance and proficiency in the target language is developed through their enrollment and active participation in those courses in the program that are taught in Spanish. Note: Final Language Proficiency is demonstrated via the STAMP Proficiency Exam in WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone
MLO 2: LINGUISTICS The student develops their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and is able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven research studies pertaining to current issues in these areas The student completes four courses related to the Spanish language and Hispanic and/or Applied Linguistics. These courses deal with: the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics and second language acquisition, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation, and bilingualism.
MLO 3: LITERARY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) of Hispanic societies. There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled: Students complete four courses in Hispanic literature and/or Hispanic culture. These courses deal with the cultures and civilizations of Spain or Hispanic America, the literatures of Spain and/or Hispanic America, The theatre and cinema of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the art and art history of Spain and /or Hispanic America, the music and music history of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the historical, political and social development of Spain and/or Hispanic America.
MLO 4: SECONDARY CULTURE OTHER THAN HISPANIC CULTURES In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. 4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those. 4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.
MLO 5: CULTURAL INTERNALIZATION & LANGUAGE IMMERSION Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experiences, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities. Students develop intercultural communication skills and strategies, and learn to adapt and respond in effective ways. Pathway 1: Study Abroad: By participating in a study-abroad program in a Spanish-speaking country for one at least summer or one semester. Classes completed in the study-abroad experience may also be counted towards another MLO. Pathway 2: Latino Heritage Community Project: By participating in and completing a community project in a local Latino community, in the target language.
MLO 6: RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY The student demonstrates an ability to use technology in support of his or her scholarly work and research projects; including gathering, organizing, and analyzing sources and employing appropriate delivery techniques in both written and oral formats.
